The symbol of the village is a hare. The old name Haragrava which is mentioned in the Domesday Book and either means 'Hare (hara) Grove' or 'Grey/Hoar (har) Grove' where the word har relates to things marking boundaries
The Mere in Ellesmere is a legacy created by the retreating ice age. An artificial island was built in 1812 where grey herons nest. In 1791 the Duke of Bridgewater & his associates got together in a local hostelry & decided that Ellesmere could become the hub of a new canal network. They raised over £1million in a day & the Llangollen canal was born. Thomas Telford was commissioned to design and oversee it. The crane and canal-side warehouse give a hint that this was once a busy working location
On the main sign is the village church of St Gregory along with a US aircraft. The English & American flags represent RAF Woodbridge & RAF Bentwaters which were used by the RAF during the Second World War, and by the USAF during the Cold War, being the primary home for the 81st Fighter Wing who for many years also operated RAF Woodbridge with Bentwaters and Woodbridge airfields being known by the Americans as the "Twin Bases". The helmet is one of the most important finds from Sutton Hoo.

Our Cast Aluminium Signs comprise of a cast aluminium panel with your illustration in low relief set into a black stove enamelled steel frame with wrought iron scrollwork, which is then mounted onto a single oak post. The pictures below show the "before and after" the raw casting and the beautifully painted finished sign.
The detailed drawing above is typical of one of the drawings that you will get for your approval, allowing you to see what your sign will look like in situ, before we start production.
Each Cast Aluminium sign is treated with etch primer, two coats of undercoat, and then hand painted with high quality, sign writer’s enamel paint. This produces a sign, with a long lasting paint finish, that won’t corrode. All our materials are selected for their durability and finished to maximise weatherproofing qualities.
We have village signs which were made over 20 years ago that haven’t needed re-painting ~ in fact we have just had one back that we made over 31 years ago for it's 1st re-paint!
